Masters in Education

INFORMATION
Masters in Education
Education is a broad and evolving field which has a significant impact on all facets of society. The Monash Master of Education has been designed to accommodate a range of specialisations to suit the career and individual aspirations of people interested in and passionate about education.
Students are encouraged to think about the relationship between research and practice, and to develop critical and analytical skills in discussing relevant and substantive research in both areas of specific interest and in wider and more general debates.
The program is an excellent choice for teachers and other educators, educational administrators, managers and policy makers, and others interested or involved in learning and development. Whether you are working within the private or public sector, or in the wider educational community, masters programs have the flexibility and breadth to accommodate your needs. The program design is flexible, so you can tailor a program to suit your specific needs. All students complete a core research methodology unit chosen from a suite which gives you an introduction to key social and educational research methods. You will also choose a number of elective units, and have the option of completing a professional project or a minor research thesis in an area that interests you.
There are three key options in the Master of Education degree, depending on what you aim to achieve.
  • Option 1: six units, comprising one research core unit and five elective units
  • Option 2: five units, comprising one research core unit and four elective units plus a professional project (8000 words)
  • Option 3: four units, comprising one research core unit and three elective units plus a minor research thesis (16,000 words).
Option 3 provides a great introduction to formal research in education, and can act as a pathway into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program, provided the grade point entry requirements for that program are met. To undertake the minor research thesis, it is expected that you will have a Distinction average in your first four units.
Students may wish to focus their studies on a certain field of expertise when undertaking their Master of Education. If this is the case, you have the option to enrol in a series of units which make up a designated specialisation. The specialisation is formed by the choice of elective units. A wide range of optional specialist pathways are currently available. For a description of these specialist pathways, please visit Postgraduate specialisation pathways web page
If you choose a specialist pathway, this will be indicated on your academic transcript and printed on your testamur.

primary education

Waverley Primary School is a friendly, welcoming school with a strong community focus. We provide a comprehensive education to all students, whilst catering for individual learning needs and abilities.
We offer an outstanding creative arts program, and many opportunities for students to be involved in a variety of sporting activities, public speaking and performance events.
Our school is set in spacious grounds, offering extensive grassed areas, multipurpose netball/basketball court and a large carpark/drop-off area.
Primary schools in NSW follow a curriculum based on stages of learning. Each stage is approximately equivalent to two school years. For each learning stage there are skills, knowledge and a level of understanding that each student should develop.

Technology

The Connected Classrooms Program is a NSW State Government initiative to provide Department of Education and Training (DET) staff and students with new opportunities to connect with each other across enhanced technology facilities for sharing resources and data collaboration
The aims of our Interactive Classrooms Project at Waverley PS:
  • we are equipped with an Interactive Classroom (interactive whiteboard, video conferencing facility and data collaboration)
  • we can enable direct video links to allow online field trips to places such as the State Library, The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the National Museum of Australia
  • we allow university and industry experts to be connected into classrooms to deliver lectures and respond to questions and ideas
  • we support increased use of ICT within Quality Teaching
  • we support teachers to personalise learning
  • we enhance opportunities for collaboration between students, teachers, classes and schools across DET
  • we provide necessary infrastructure to enhance collegial support networks for teachers.

distance education university

Browse a wide variety of online distance learning programs and locate the one that's best for you. Find opportunities by selecting the distance learning programs or online courses that spark your interest, the degree level of your choice, and your campus requirements.
Pinpoint your area of interest! Finding the right distance learning or online degree program is easier than ever. To find a distance education degree program, simply use the search box above. Additionally, the colleges listed to the right have been selected because they offer quality distance learning programs.

Advantages of distance education programs

The most obvious advantage of distance learning programs is accessibility. Distance learning degree programs will allow you to pursue a degree from the comfort of your own home, without needing to worry about moving or otherwise changing your own circumstances to pursue the degree.

Distance learning programs can also be tailored to fit into students' schedules. Students won't find themselves lamenting the fact that their own lives prevent them from pursuing an education, when they have the flexibility afforded by programs for distance learning degrees.
But opportunities for distance learning degrees also come with additional boons. For example, a distance education program will often provide opportunities of some sort in the area immediately around the participating student. Distance learning nursing programs, for example, might help to identify nursing programs in the vicinity of the students, so that those students can participate in hands-on programs during their educations.
Distance learning programs will also often provide advantages in terms of lowered costs, as well. It's not always true, but a distance learning program has a good chance of costing significantly less than an in-person, brick and mortar educational program might.
There are several other problems that arise with brick and mortar schools but don't crop up in terms of distance learning. For example, brick and mortar educational programs often have limits to the number of students they can accept. Whether due to dormitory limitations, or due to classroom limits, sometimes educational institutions will fill up on students. Fortunately, distance learning programs do not generally encounter the same problem.
This also means that distance learning degree programs are more accessible to hopeful students on the whole, because more students can get into those distance learning degree programs.

Distance learning requirements

The biggest requirement of any distance learning program is likely to be a connection to the Internet. In this day and age, that's not normally a problem, but it is something to think about.

A fast Internet connection would be useful, especially if the distance education program in question involves watching live streaming lectures or anything similar. This type of distance learning degree program would use "synchronous" technology, meaning that it would function with all users and participants active at the same time.
"Asynchronous" technologies, like email and forums, would allow the students in a distance education program to participate at different times, but it would still require an Internet connection.

What is distance education?

Distance education aims to deliver a quality university education to students who are not able to be physically present on campus.
